Experiencing ‘Idol’ Burnout: Eight Seasons Was Enough, Nine Is Too Much
Filed under: Hot Topics
For the past eight years, I've tuned in every Tuesday and Wednesday to watch 'American Idol.' It was a weekly routine. I would watch the singers, listen to the judges and vote ... a lot. If you took a look at my phone bill, you'd notice an increase in calls every time 'Idol' was on. I did this for eight years. But now that season 9 is upon us, I've lost interest. I watched the beginning -- the auditions, Hollywood Week. But the lack of talent has stunned me -- and the problem is, you have to weed through the untalented to get to the talented.
The previous seasons of 'Idol' had eight or nine people who could be stars. Not all would be, but they had potential. This year, there are only two people whom I would actually buy a record from: Michael Lynche, a smooth-singing new father, and Crystal Bowersox, a Sheryl Crow-type. The fast-forward button has never been more valuable.
