In season nine’s first truly surprising results show, the ‘American Idol’ pack was cut down to 12, and Alex Lambert, Katelyn Epperly, Lilly Scott and Todrick Hall aren’t among them. We talked to the final four to almost make it to the top 12 in the weekly post-results show conference call, and most of them expressed their surprise at being cut. Also surprising: Some of their opinions about being on the show; let’s just say Lilly expresses some sentiments that could fall into the “sour grapes” category. As for the others, Todrick Hall has the best idea: He plans on turning his time in the ‘AI’ spotlight into a gig on another Fox series …

What was happening after you were eliminated, and they cut to commercial, and then they came back and there were a lot of people on the stage huddled around you? It seemed very emotional.
A lot of people were talking to me, and yes, it was emotional, pretty much because a lot of people weren’t expecting the people that went home to go home. There are people in the top 12 (who) everyone thought was going home, and then when they found out it was me … that whole day, I was nervous, and people were saying, ‘Dude, why are you nervous? You have no reason to be nervous. You’re going to be here.’ And then when I got cut, they were just like, ‘Whaaat?’ And a lot of people that were upset were like, ‘I made it and he didn’t?’
